‘Earth – Moon – Earth’ : poetry of the lunar surface

My latest North Sea Poets substack post discusses ‘Earth – Moon – Earth’, an artwork by internationally renowned artist Katie Paterson, and the problematic impulse of poets & artists to use the moon as a mirror to our human experience.

In 2012, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata was encrypted in Morse code and ‘bounced’ off the lunar surface. What came back – ‘the moon’s response’ – demonstrated something profound to us about our impulse to use the moon as muse and/or mirror.

A conversation to be continued at the North Sea Poets ‘Writing With’ seminars this autumn.
